Fresh breath and healthy gums
Looking after your gums is as important as caring for your teeth. A build up of tartar (calculus) on your teeth can cause irritation to your gums resulting in them getting swollen, sore and bleeding. This is easy to prevent if cleaning is carried out regularly. This build up is also often the source of bad breath and discoloured teeth.
Bleeding gums are often the first sign of a more serious gum disease. If left untreated this can lead to abcesses and wobbly teeth! Some people are more likely to suffer from gum disease than others. Often if your parents or grandparents have had problems with their gums (wearing dentures is a good sign of this) you can inherit this susceptibility too.
Smoking, poor tooth-brushing and missing your regular cleans can make this problem worse and progress at a much faster rate.
We always check for early signs of gum disease during your visits and can advise you of any treatment that might be required to try and stop or slow the progression of this disease. Unfortunately if not caught early there is nothing that can reverse its effects. Luckily if caught early, regular cleaning and good tooth brushing (and flossing too- sorry!) can help keep it under control.
The best way to keep your gums healthy, your breath fresh and your smile sparkling is a regular clean and polish!
